Taiwan’s government stated on Monday that there is no new "stage of talks" with the US on arms sales, following President-elect Donald Trump’s recent remarks suggesting Taiwan should pay the US for protection.
Trump’s re-election and comments have raised concerns in Taiwan, which faces increasing military pressure from China. In response, Taiwan’s presidential office confirmed that while discussions on military needs have occurred, no new arms talks are underway.
Taiwan, rejecting China’s sovereignty claims, maintains a backlog of $20 billion in previously ordered US weapons. Despite the lack of a formal defense treaty, the US remains Taiwan's key arms supplier and international ally.
