Market Daily Report: Bursa Malaysia Ends Nearly Flat As Construction Stocks Attract Buying

 KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia closed almost flat on Tuesday as buying interest rotated away from index heavyweights towards smaller-cap construction stocks, with sentiment affected by geopolitical uncertainty, said an analyst. At 5 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) eased 0.39 of a point to 1,714.40 from Monday’s close of 1,714.79. The benchmark index opened 1.65 points lower at 1,713.14 and moved between 1,710.44 and 1,714.50 throughout the trading session. The broader market was almost evenly balanced, with decliners leading gainers 548 to 546, while 598 counters were unchanged, 1,107 were untraded and 25 were suspended. Turnover expanded to 4.13 billion units valued at RM3.14 billion from 3.60 billion units valued at RM2.45 billion on Monday.

North Korea Ratifies Mutual Defense Pact with Russia, Bolstering Military Ties

North Korea has ratified a mutual defense treaty with Russia , pledging each side's support in case of an armed attack, North Korean state media reported Tuesday. The treaty, signed by leaders Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin in June, requires "immediate military and other assistance" if either nation enters a state of war. The agreement further strengthens military cooperation , with North Korea reportedly sending over 10,000 troops to support Russia in its conflict with Ukraine. Both Seoul and Washington have confirmed North Korean troops are actively involved in combat near the Ukraine border .

US Unveils 11-Nation Plan to Monitor North Korea's Nuclear Threat

The United States , alongside South Korea, Japan , and eight other nations, launched a new initiative to monitor North Korea’s nuclear weapons development . This plan follows the dissolution of a UN panel of experts earlier this year, after Russia's veto prevented the continuation of international monitoring. The newly formed Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team includes Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand , and the UK , along with the US , South Korea , and Japan . Its goal is to ensure the full implementation of UN sanctions on North Korea by rigorously investigating and publishing findings on sanctions violations and attempts to evade them. This announcement comes amidst rising tensions on the Korean peninsula , with North Korea recently destroying roads connecting to the South and Kim Jong Un ramping up threats against South Korea .
