Argentina Central Bank Working to Enable Dollar-Denominated Debit Cards

Argentina's central bank is collaborating with banks and credit card companies to introduce debit cards denominated in U.S. dollars , according to bank chief Santiago Bausili in a post on X (formerly Twitter). This initiative is part of a broader effort to adopt the U.S. dollar as the country's official currency . Bausili mentioned that the regulations are in place , but the actual implementation will require system and security developments , which are currently underway. Although he did not specify a launch date, earlier reports from Infobae indicated the cards could be available by year-end . This move aligns with President Javier Milei’s campaign pledge to dollarize Argentina's economy and gradually phase out the central bank. While Milei has slowed down the immediate shutdown of the central bank, his administration has focused on curtailing the supply of pesos and expanding the use of dollars for more types of transactions.
