Taiwan Denies New Arms Talks with US Amid Trump’s Protection Payment Remarks

Taiwan’s government stated on Monday that there is no new "stage of talks" with the US on arms sales , following President-elect Donald Trump’s recent remarks suggesting Taiwan should pay the US for protection. Trump’s re-election and comments have raised concerns in Taiwan , which faces increasing military pressure from China . In response, Taiwan’s presidential office confirmed that while discussions on military needs have occurred, no new arms talks are underway. China Edges Toward $1 Trillion Trade Surplus, Raising Global Trade Tensions

China is on track to achieve a record $1 trillion trade surplus in 2024, a shift likely to increase tensions with major economies. As of October, China’s trade surplus reached $785 billion , marking a 16% increase from 2023, driven by robust export volumes as domestic demand remains weak. The surplus has led to significant imbalances with key partners: up 4.4% with the US , 9.6% with the EU , and nearly 36% with ASEAN nations . With President-elect Trump set to take office, experts anticipate new tariffs on Chinese goods , echoing protective measures already implemented by countries in South America and Europe. Additionally, foreign direct investment (FDI) outflows from China are rising, marking a potential net FDI decline for the first time since 1990. In response, Beijing is promising increased support for industries to stabilize trade and employment. A potential currency war looms, as a weaker yuan could make Chinese exports cheaper. India has signaled readiness to let the ru...

US House Passes Bill to Blacklist Certain Chinese Biotech Firms Amid Security Concerns

The US House of Representatives has passed the Biosecure Act, a bill that would blacklist several Chinese biotech companies and their US subsidiaries, citing national security concerns. The legislation reflects growing fears that China could dominate another field pioneered by the US, similar to earlier concerns about TikTok and data security. Opposition and Concerns over Process : Critics, including Representative Jim McGovern and Representative Jamie Raskin, argue that the bill arbitrarily targets...

The Biden administration is set to announce a new rule next month that will expand the United States' authority to restrict exports of semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China from certain foreign countries, according to sources familiar with the matter. However, the rule will exempt key allies that export crucial chipmaking equipment, such as Japan, the Netherlands, and South Korea, thereby limiting the overall impact. Major equipment manufacturers like ASML and Tokyo Electron will remain unaffected. Rule Details and Scope The new rule, an extension of the Foreign Direct Product rule, aims to prevent approximately half a dozen Chinese fabs involved in advanced chipmaking from receiving exports from numerous countries. Nations affected by the rule include Israel, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia. Specific Chinese fabs to be impacted were not disclosed. A spokesperson for the US Commerce Department, which manages export controls, declined to comment. Strategic Objectives The ru...
