Trump’s New Tariff Package Spares Imported Steel and Aluminum from Additional Duties

President Trump’s sweeping “Liberation Day” tariffs excluded steel and aluminum already under existing 25% duties, offering relief to U.S. manufacturers and avoiding further cost inflation in the metals supply chain. What Happened Imported steel and aluminum , already subject to a  25% tariff  (in place since 2018), were  not included  in the new reciprocal tariff regime announced Wednesday. Trump  expanded  the original metals tariffs last month to include  hundreds of finished products , but refrained from adding  new reciprocal duties  on raw steel/aluminum imports in the latest move. Market Impact The decision  eases pressure on U.S. metal buyers , who were bracing for even higher costs if reciprocal tariffs had been extended to steel and aluminum. Inflation and Tariffs: How U.S. Consumers Are Affected

The impact of  U.S. tariffs  on goods like  steel  and  aluminum  continues to affect both the U.S. economy and consumers. Experts are debating whether the effects of these tariffs will bring higher prices and slow economic growth, especially with inflation already at relatively high levels. Tariffs and Their Economic Impact : Tariff Increases : Tariffs on  aluminum  and  steel  are going higher than before, but the economic argument behind these increases is unclear.  Aluminum production  in the U.S. isn't very elastic, meaning it won’t increase much despite higher prices. This could mean continued high prices for aluminum products without the expected boost in local production. Previous Impact : In 2018, a 25% tariff on  steel  reduced U.S. steel consumption by 7 million tons. Businesses such as  automakers  and  homebuilders  started using  less steel  to reduce costs, leading to produ...

Trump Threatens to Double Tariffs on Canadian Steel and Aluminum, But Backs Down

President Donald Trump  caused a stir on Tuesday when he threatened to  double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum  after Ontario retaliated with higher tariffs on electricity exports to the U.S. However, by the end of the day, both sides agreed to  suspend  these measures. Key Points: Tariff Threat and Retaliation : The tension began on Monday when Ontario announced it would impose a  25% surcharge  on electricity sent to U.S. states like  Michigan ,  Minnesota , and  New York . Trump responded by threatening to raise tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum from  25% to 50% , starting the next morning. Negotiations and Suspension : Late Tuesday, after talks between Ontario Premier  Doug Ford  and  U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick , Ontario agreed to  suspend  the electricity surcharge, which led to a de-escalation of the tariff threats. Ongoing Steel and Aluminum Tariffs : Despite the suspension of ...
