China and Indonesia have agreed to significantly enhance cooperation in several key sectors, including lithium, new energy vehicles (NEVs), green energy, and tourism. This development follows a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who is currently on a visit to China, marking the first country he has visited since assuming office last month.
President Prabowo, who won the Indonesian presidential election in February, chose China as his first destination as president-elect, underscoring Indonesia's strong commitment to deepening its strategic ties with Beijing.
Key Agreements and Cooperation
According to a joint statement released on Saturday (Nov 9), both nations have outlined a framework for collaboration in areas crucial for future global development. The two countries aim to boost their partnership in new energy vehicles, lithium batteries, and photovoltaic energy (solar power), while also capitalizing on opportunities in the digital economy and green development sectors.
The statement emphasized that both China and Indonesia would explore potential cooperation in the mining sector, leveraging Indonesia’s vast resource endowments and China’s production capacity to drive further economic growth in these high-demand industries.
Revitalizing Tourism
Another key area of cooperation is tourism. With both nations eager to surpass pre-pandemic tourism levels, they agreed to introduce new visa measures, including multi-entry and long-term visas, aimed at facilitating easier travel between the two countries. Additionally, both sides will encourage more direct flights and explore new tourist destinations based on growing demand.
Signed Deals
During President Prabowo’s visit, several cooperation deals were signed, including agreements in housing and the export of fresh coconuts from Indonesia to China. These agreements signal the growing trade and investment between the two countries, reflecting their shared commitment to fostering closer economic and diplomatic relations.
The enhanced ties between China and Indonesia come at a time when both nations are seeking to play a more significant role in the global economy, particularly in emerging industries like electric vehicles, green energy, and sustainable development.
