NEW YORK, Sept 17 (Reuters) — YouTube marked its 20th anniversary with a bold push into artificial intelligence, unveiling more than 30 new AI-driven tools to help creators produce, edit, and monetize content.
CEO Neal Mohan emphasized that AI would not replace jobs but instead serve as a “toolbox” to empower creators, reinforcing YouTube as a “viable, respectable and sustainable career path.”
AI at the Core of Growth
Backed by Google’s AI expertise, YouTube is deploying features that:
Auto-embed shopping links into videos.
Generate first-cut edits from raw clips.
Turn speech into songs.
Create AI-generated videos for podcasts.
The upgrades triple last year’s product rollout, underscoring YouTube’s commitment to creators.
Rivalry With Disney
YouTube captured 13.4% of U.S. TV viewership in July, ahead of Disney’s 9.4%, according to Nielsen. Analysts expect YouTube’s 2025 revenue to surpass Disney’s US$60B, solidifying its position as the dominant media platform.
Creator Economy Surge
With US$100 billion paid out to creators over the last four years, YouTube stars like Dua Lipa, Mark Rober, and Smosh now rival traditional TV hosts in influence. Some reinvest earnings into full-fledged production studios, raising the bar for online content.
“YouTube is no longer just a video platform—it’s the future of media powered by creators and AI,” Mohan said.
