KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia's key index closed at an intraday high today, supported by continued buying interest even as renewed geopolitical tensions and a weaker overnight lead from Wall Street following the US Federal Reserve's (Fed) decision to stand pat on interest rates weighed on broader sentiment. The Fed has decided to hold rates steady for the fifth consecutive meeting, with the Federal Funds Rate unchanged between 3.50 per cent and 3.75 per cent. At 5 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 4.84 points to 1,720.40 from yesterday’s close of 1,715.56. The benchmark index, which opened 1.14 points lower at 1,714.42, hit its lowest level of 1,710.69 in early trade before gaining momentum for the rest of the day. Toyota Motor has announced it will postpone the start of electric vehicle (EV) production in North America to the first half of 2026 due to design adjustments and slowing EV sales, according to a report from the Nikkei business daily.
Initially slated for late 2025, the production of Toyota's first battery EV model—a three-row SUV at its Kentucky factory—has been delayed by several months, confirmed Toyota spokesperson Scott Vazin. The new production timeline is expected to begin in early 2026.
Vazin mentioned that Toyota plans to introduce five to seven battery electric vehicle models in the US within the next two years, despite the delay in production.
Supply chain disruptions and internal governance issues had contributed to this six-month delay, pushing the start date to around June 2026, sources told Reuters. Toyota had previously aimed to produce electric SUVs under its Lexus brand in North America by 2030, but the company has since abandoned that plan, opting instead to ship vehicles from Japan.
In February, Toyota announced a US$1.3 billion investment into its Kentucky facility as part of its broader effort toward electrification.
