German Finance Minister Christian Lindner has cautioned Donald Trump against initiating a trade war with the European Union if he wins a second term in the White House, emphasizing that such actions would harm both the US and the EU. Lindner, who leads the pro-business Free Democrats, urged for transatlantic solidarity in countering China, which he described as a potential threat to "liberal democracies and free traders."
Lindner’s remarks reflect the widespread concerns in Europe over the potential economic impacts of a Trump presidency. Trump has praised tariffs as “beautiful” and has expressed support for imposing them, raising fears of renewed tensions between the US and the EU. These concerns come amid disputes over the US Inflation Reduction Act, a series of green subsidies aimed at boosting domestic investments in the US.
Lindner, an advocate of Germany’s debt brake policy, is currently visiting New York and will proceed to Washington to attend meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. He also emphasized the need for a fair trade agreement between Brussels and Washington, regardless of the outcome of the US election.
