KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia closed almost flat on Tuesday as buying interest rotated away from index heavyweights towards smaller-cap construction stocks, with sentiment affected by geopolitical uncertainty, said an analyst. At 5 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) eased 0.39 of a point to 1,714.40 from Monday’s close of 1,714.79. The benchmark index opened 1.65 points lower at 1,713.14 and moved between 1,710.44 and 1,714.50 throughout the trading session. The broader market was almost evenly balanced, with decliners leading gainers 548 to 546, while 598 counters were unchanged, 1,107 were untraded and 25 were suspended. Turnover expanded to 4.13 billion units valued at RM3.14 billion from 3.60 billion units valued at RM2.45 billion on Monday.
Hundreds of Hilton Hotel Workers Strike in Seattle, Demanding Higher Wages and Reversal of Pandemic Cuts
More than 100 Hilton hotel workers in Seattle have gone on strike, demanding higher wages, fair staffing levels, and the reversal of Covid-19 era cuts, according to the Unite Here union on Saturday.
The weeklong strike, involving 374 workers from the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Seattle Airport and Hilton Seattle Airport & Conference Center, is scheduled to continue until the early hours of Oct 19, the union confirmed.
In response, a Hilton spokesperson emphasized the company's commitment to negotiating in good faith to reach agreements that benefit both employees and the hotels.
This strike is part of a larger movement involving over 4,300 hotel workers across Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriott hotels in major cities such as Honolulu, San Diego, San Francisco, and Seattle. In September, around 2,000 workers walked off the job at Hilton's largest hotel globally, the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu.
The strike follows a broader trend in the hospitality industry, where around 10,000 US hotel workers initiated strikes over Labor Day weekend after contract negotiations with major hotel chains stalled.
Unite Here, the union representing these workers, advocates for employees across hotels, casinos, and airports in the United States and Canada, as the push for fair wages and improved working conditions continues to gain momentum.
