MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd (KL) witnessed a surge in investor interest on Monday, with trading volume hitting its highest level in nearly seven months. The renewed attention comes amid news that Threadstone Capital Sdn Bhd is eyeing a significant investment in one of MSM's key subsidiaries.
Key Highlights:
Stock Rally: MSM shares soared by as much as 21% to RM2.01, their highest since July 31, before closing the day up 0.6% at RM1.66, resulting in a market capitalization of RM1.17 billion.
Volume Spike: Trading volume reached 20.62 million shares, more than 11 times the average over the past two months and the highest since January 26, 2024.
Investment Race: Threadstone Capital, a major shareholder of Theta Edge Bhd (KL), is reportedly planning to inject RM500 million into MSM Johor in exchange for a 49% stake.
Wilmar’s Interest: Singapore-based Wilmar International Ltd is also reportedly interested in acquiring a direct stake in MSM’s Johor-based sugar refinery, which is the largest standalone refinery in Malaysia, capable of producing up to two million tonnes of sugar annually.
Strategic Partner Potential: BIMB Securities highlighted that Wilmar, with its strong brand reputation and extensive sugar refining expertise across multiple countries, would be an ideal strategic partner for MSM. Wilmar’s involvement could significantly boost MSM’s export sales by leveraging its vast customer base.
Competitive Landscape: MSM is one of only two sugar refiners in Malaysia, the other being Central Sugars Refinery Sdn Bhd (CSR), controlled by billionaire Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Albukhary. Syed Mokhtar has previously shown interest in acquiring a stake in MSM.
Current Ownership: MSM is currently controlled by agribusiness giant FGV Holdings Bhd (KL), which holds a 51% stake, followed by Koperasi Permodalan Felda Malaysia Bhd with 15.27%, and Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB), a unit trust fund under Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB), with 6.68%.
As the race for a stake in MSM Johor intensifies, the spotlight remains on which strategic investor will come out on top.
