Apple Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc. have engaged in discussions to integrate Meta's generative artificial intelligence (AI) model into Apple's newly announced AI system for iPhones, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported Sunday.
The talks also involve AI startup Anthropic, which has been negotiating with Apple to incorporate its generative AI technology into the Apple Intelligence platform, according to sources familiar with the matter cited by the WSJ.
Apple, Meta, and Anthropic did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside regular business hours.
These discussions are in preliminary stages and may not lead to finalized agreements. However, successful negotiations would significantly expand the distribution channels for these AI companies, potentially offering them substantial financial benefits. The WSJ reported that the negotiations include possibilities for AI firms to sell premium subscriptions to their services through Apple Intelligence.
AI search startup Perplexity is also reported to be in talks with Apple to integrate its generative AI technology into Apple Intelligence, a source told Reuters.
Apple recently unveiled its AI strategy, aiming to integrate Apple Intelligence across its suite of applications, including Siri. This move also includes the addition of Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT to Apple devices.
The potential partnerships underscore Apple's commitment to enhancing its AI capabilities, positioning the company at the forefront of the rapidly evolving AI landscape. As these discussions progress, the integration of advanced AI technologies promises to enhance the functionality and user experience of Apple's products.
