High Drama and Big Impact: Trump’s Bold Tariff Plans and What to Expect

Expect significant new tariffs on Chinese imports and moderate levies on goods from other nations , as President-elect Donald Trump rolls out his protectionist agenda. However, with his preference for chaotic policymaking and sudden shifts , there’s uncertainty on how soon these import taxes will actually hit. Dubbed “ Tariff Man ,” Trump aims to use tariffs both strategically and tactically . He’s mentioned taxing all Chinese goods up to 60% and potentially setting 10%-20% tariffs on imports globally , but details on these plans remain vague . Key players within Trump’s team are divided: Robert Lighthizer , a staunch tariff advocate, sees permanent duties as crucial to balance US trade , while others, like billionaires John Paulson and Scott Bessent , view tariffs as temporary leverage. Trump’s previous administration had mixed feelings, especially on national security-related trade limits , which he sometimes dismissed, favoring an “open for business” approach. High-profile busin

Singapore Savings Bonds (June 2024): How to Buy and What to Expect

Welcome to the ultimate guide to Singapore Savings Bonds (SSBs)! Here, you'll find everything you need to know about SSBs, from the latest interest rates to how to invest in them. Whether you're new to investing or just looking for safe, steady returns, this guide has got you covered.

What Are Singapore Savings Bonds?

Singapore Savings Bonds are specially structured government securities designed for individual investors. Simply put, when you buy an SSB, you're lending money to the Singapore government, which pays you interest in return. Think of it as becoming a mini-bank for the government, along with many others.

Launched in 2015 by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), a new SSB is issued every month. The goal is to provide investors with access to long-term interest rate returns with maximum flexibility and zero risk.

Why Invest in SSBs?

  1. Safe and Guaranteed: Backed by the triple-A credit rating of the Singapore government, SSBs are among the safest investments you can make. Your principal is guaranteed, so you’ll get back the money you put in, plus interest.
  2. Flexible: Unlike traditional bonds, you can redeem SSBs at any time without penalties. Even if you withdraw early, you still get to keep the interest paid every six months.
  3. No Risk: SSBs always trade at par value, meaning your capital is protected regardless of interest rate changes.

Current Interest Rates

For the upcoming July 2024 tranche, SSBs offer an average return of 3.30% per year. The application for this tranche closes on June 25, 2024.

How Much Can You Earn?

Interest rates on SSBs are linked to long-term Singapore Government Securities (SGS) rates and increase the longer you hold your bonds. For example, investing $10,000 in SSBs might yield around $300 a year over ten years.

How to Buy SSBs

Before You Apply

You'll need:

  • A bank account and ATM card (or online banking) with DBS/POSB, OCBC, or UOB.
  • An individual CDP Securities account with Direct Crediting Service activated. You must be at least 18 years old to open this account.

Application Process

  1. Timing: A new SSB is issued monthly. Applications open on the first business day and close four business days before the end of the month.
  2. Method: Apply through ATMs or internet banking of participating banks. Applications must be in multiples of $500, with a $2 transaction fee.
  3. Payment: You can buy SSBs using cash or Supplementary Retirement Scheme (SRS) funds. In the future, CPF savings might also be an option.

Success Notification

If your application is successful, you'll receive a notification from CDP via mail, and results will be announced three business days before the end of the month.

How to Redeem SSBs

To redeem, submit your request through ATMs or DBS/POSB internet banking. You’ll get your money back, plus any accrued interest, by the second business day of the next month.

Investment Limits

  • Minimum: $500
  • Maximum: $200,000

You can top-up in multiples of $500 and apply for up to $50,000 in any single bond issue.

Is SSB Right for You?

Consider these questions:

  1. What’s Your Time Horizon? The longer you hold SSBs, the better the yield. If you need flexibility, SSBs allow you to withdraw anytime without penalty.
  2. Can You Get Better Yields Elsewhere? Compare SSB rates with fixed deposits and savings accounts. SSBs often provide higher returns for a safe investment.
  3. Are You Looking for Steady, Safe Returns? SSBs are perfect for conservative investors looking to park savings with guaranteed returns and no risk.

Conclusion

Singapore Savings Bonds are an excellent option for those seeking safe, flexible, and steady returns. They are easy to invest in and provide a guaranteed return, making them a great addition to any portfolio.

We hope this guide has been helpful and encourages more people to consider SSBs as a viable investment option. Happy investing!

3M Raises Profit Forecast After Beating Quarterly Estimates on Electronics Demand

3M Co raised the lower end of its full-year adjusted profit forecast after strong demand for electronics and industrial products helped the company surpass quarterly profit expectations. Shares of 3M were up 4.2% at $140.5 in pre-market trading. An increase in demand for electronics used in vehicles and mobile phones boosted profits for the company, which had previously faced challenges as high inflation led consumers to delay major purchases. The industrial sector is also expected to benefit from the recent US Federal Reserve decision to cut borrowing costs in September, encouraging more consumer spending. 3M has implemented cost-cutting measures, including job reductions and spinning off its healthcare business, to counter the impact of a demand slowdown . Key highlights from the report: Sales in the transportation and electronics segment grew 1.8% year-on-year. Sales in the safety and industrial segment , which produces adhesives for industrial use, increased by 0.5% . 3M&
