The benchmark index, which opened 0.93 of-a-point higher at 1,672.55, moved between 1,668.61 and 1,674.11 throughout the trading session.

Market breadth was negative as losers surpassed gainers 748 to 388, while 517 counters were unchanged, 1,271 untraded and 91 suspended.

Turnover slipped to 3.11 billion units worth RM2.40 billion from 4.07 billion units valued at RM2.69 billion on Friday.

Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said the stockbroking firm maintained a cautious view of the market as persistent external headwinds and foreign selling could limit near-term upside.

“Nevertheless, the recent market correction has brought valuations of selected blue-chip stocks to more attractive levels, which could encourage bargain hunting, particularly among fundamentally strong heavyweights.

“Hence, we expect trading to remain selective, with buying interest likely to emerge on further weakness,” he told Bernama.

As such, he anticipated the FBM KLCI to trend within the 1,660-1,690 range for the week.

Berjaya Research Sdn Bhd head of research Kenneth Leong said market attention will also turn to US job openings and consumer confidence data due tomorrow, which could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve’s policy path and global risk appetite.

“A softer-than-expected set of readings may offer some relief to equities, but signs of resilient labour demand or weakening consumer sentiment could add to market volatility,” he said.
